Sending Consultations

Data Formats

One API message supports several possible data formats, providing flexibility to meet your use case. You can send data using any combination of the following;

File Attachments

Allowing several different MIME types, including PDF, text, and common image formats, and allowing up to 10 attachments in one message, the files are uploaded to the patient record as discrete documents. All uploaded files are virus-scanned before transmission to the GP System.

SNOMED Coded Structured Data

Uses defined message fields to allow for the transmission of SNOMED coded data. Transmit as many items as required, with code, value, units, and supporting free text.

'Searchable' Consultation Notes

A custom attachment MIME-type can be used to allow for free text data to be applied to the patient record as 'consultation notes' that will be visible to searches run against the patient record. This is unlike the standard file attachments, where the GP System will not be able to search their contents.

For more information on sending documents, please visit the Sending Documents Introduction

'Instant' Document Application

Ordinarily when sending documents, the GP will be required to review and accept or reject each message. Where appropriate, and with full control in the hands of the practitioner, it is possible to allow certain systems to bypass this 'review and approve' process and have the documents applied directly to the patient's records without further user intervention.

Use of 'instant' messages may only be applied in the following cases:

  • Where the practitioner has explicitly allowed this access for the given sending system
  • Where the document being sent was produced by the same user in the third-party system

See Pre-approved Messaging Integration Guide for details on how to set up instant messaging and how to send messages for this purpose.

Sending Consultation Summaries via GP Connect

Optionally, and if your system and use case meet the compliance requirements, you can use the same API to send consultation summaries via GP Connect. This offers a simpler API and reduced compliance burden for your system over direct integration.

See Sending Consultation Summaries via GP Connect for details on how to send consultation summaries via GP Connect.
